ANNUAL SPECIALITY QUOTA PROGRAM

The Annual Speciality Quota Program focuses on smaller or specialized markets that aren’t currently being supplied by registered chicken producers. The program covers specialty chicken breeds, unique weight categories, specialized production methods (eg certified organic, pastured), and chickens slaughtered in accordance with religious teachings.

Program Highlights

  • Limited to farmers who are not currently registered with MCP as chicken producers.
  • Interested Manitoba farmers (age 18 +) must first apply to become a Designated Annual Speciality Producer (details below).
  • Annual Speciality Quota is allocated for one year at a time, based on a calendar year.  Renewal of an annual allotment is at the discretion of MCP.
  • The Annual Speciality Quota allotments are for a minimum of 10,000 kilograms per year.
  • Designated Annual Speciality Producers must own land and buildings suitable for chicken production. Leasing of land and/or buildings is not permitted. Facilities must be certified by MCP.
  • Designated Annual Speciality Producers must comply with all of the requirements of the “Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Hatching Eggs, Breeders, Chickens and Turkeys” and the national on-farm food safety and animal care programs.  This includes regular farm inspections.
  • All chicken marketed under this program is subject to a per kilogram levy payable to MCP.
  • All chicken marketed under this program must comply with Manitoba’s Public Health Act.
  • All quotas alloted to Designated Annual Speciality Producers are the property of MCP and cannot be sold or transferred.

Program Fees

  • There is a one-time fee of $210 (incl GST) to apply for designation as an Annual Speciality Producer.
  • Designated Annual Speciality Producers pay an annual designation charge of $525 (incl GST).

Applying for designation as an Annual Speciality Producer

The following information must accompany the $210 application fee.

  1. Completed application form (click to download form)
  2.  Current Status of Title for the land where the barn is located.  The name(s) on the Title must match the names on the application form.
  3. Business plan detailing: the proposed specialty market; the name and location of the hatchery supplying the chicks; how and where the chicken will be raised; the name and location of the processing facility; and how and where the chicken will be sold.
